Advertising Product Photography

The company I am representing is Ray-Ban. The product is a brand-new pair of glasses. The target audience is people who wear glasses. You would expect to see this ad in magazines or as a poster in the store. The lighting I used was soft lighting. The only props I used where the glasses and my subject.

The Story Behind The Photo

My name is Adrienne and I am currently a junior in high school. I am in the library because I am studying for the SAT. I’m very nervous about taking this test because it is a lot to study for. I usually do very well on my tests in school, but this one is different because it is based on everything I have learned. I know I can get a good score on this test if I have a quiet place to study, like the library. I have a couple of days before the test to study, so my main focus right now is studying for this test.

I am also in full IB, so my grades are very important to me. I have other tests to study for in school and I usually do well on them. But it is a lot to handle, especially when everyone around me is so loud. Its hard to get work done in class because my classmates talk really loud. I end up having a lot of work to get done at home because it is hard to focus in school with so many distractions. But I found that the library is the best place to focus in because of the limited distractions and the peacefulness. I like how it is so quiet, which is why I prefer to stay in here.

Although I think my education is very important, I still like to have fun. Later today I’m going to go out with my friends to find a nice coffee shop. Then we are going to Barnes & Noble to find a nice book to read together so we can read it at the coffee shop. That might not seem fun to everyone, but its fun to me. I think the best memories I have are with my friends. That’s why I like spending time with them a lot. I think having a good time contributes to my positive attitude.

Barbra Kruger Style

I want the viewer to feel like knowledge is something very important and shouldn’t be looked down upon when looking at this photograph. I think I did good job doing a Barbra Kruger style photograph. It captures a meaning behind the photo and makes it more interesting.

Buying a New Digital Camera

The camera I chose to purchase was the Nikon Z8 Mirrorless Camera. The Nikon Z8 is a compact, lightweight camera housing much of the technology from the Z9 but in a sleeker, more portable package. The FX-format 45.7MP BSI stacked CMOS sensor offers a useful combination of resolution, fast readout speeds, impressive clarity, and minimal noise. Complementing the sensor is the EXPEED 7 processing engine, which offers speeds approximately 10x faster than a Z7 II. It is able to buffer over 1000 raw images in a burst, meaning raw image sequences can be recorded for approximately 50 seconds continuously. Also, during playback, you can skip to the first shot of a given burst to expedite the on-camera review process. The Pre-Release Capture helps make decisive moment shots easier by recording frames in a burst for up a second prior to actually releasing the shutter. Electronic shutter affords a top shutter speed of 1/32,000 sec for working in the brightest conditions with wider apertures. AF calculations are done at a 120 fps rate to keep up with fast continuous shooting speeds. High Efficiency RAW file format maintains image quality akin to uncompressed raw files but with file sizes approximately 30% smaller for faster reading/writing to the memory card. Relying on the speed and stacked design of the sensor, the Z8 completely forgoes a mechanical shutter and uses just an electronic shutter for all capture modes. The speed of the sensor enables recording at up to 1/32,000 sec and the stacked structure reduces motion distortion for accurate depiction of fast-moving subjects, like golf clubs, baseball bats, and automobiles. By removing the mechanical shutter, the Z8 can also operate completely silently and there is no worry over mechanical shutter wear or breakdown. The Z8 improves on the sensor’s inherent capabilities with a series of processing tools and shooting functions to improve portraits such as Fine-tune hue and brightness while shooting for more precise control while shooting, Skin softening can be used on up to three subjects in a shot and slightly blurs the skin for a more pleasing texture while still retaining essential sharpness on eyes and hair, and Manual white balance control is more intuitive when making adjustments and Auto WB has also been optimized for human subjects. Covering the full sensor area, the Z8 uses the flagship 493-point phase-detection AF system to realize fast and accurate focusing performance. This system is benefitted by the high-speed communication of the Z interface along with the speed of the sensor that enables AF readings to occur at up to 120 fps.

Studio Portraits with Strobes & Gels

The subject is surrounded by colors that remind me of watermelon. She also has a serious face on. I like how there’s different colors instead of just one because it grabs your attention. I also like how her skin looks very smooth in the light. It looks very professional.

Portraits with Makeup

  1. Opacity makes the colors more transparent
  2. Different brush textures is very helpful for hair
  3. Smaller brush sizes are very helpful for small details
  4. Brush presets are very helpful when you are just starting
  5. Exploring different brushes and colors makes your drawings better

Introduction to Using Strobes

  1.  Symmetric power packs split power equally between multiple flash heads.
  2. Assymetric power packs allow the user to vary the power supply to different flash heads.
  3. Monolights, on the other hand, are compact substitutes for a power pack/flash head combinations.
  4. Most strobe lights allow you to completely remove the reflector and attach different kinds of light modifiers.
  5. Reflecting umbrellas produce a diffused and soft light due to the larger size of the reflecting surface.
  6.  Silver-lined umbrellas are the most efficient and can focus light more  narrowly than the other types.
  7. White umbrellas offer a wider spread of reflected light, and gold umbrellas produce a warm tone.
  8. The difference between reflecting umbrellas and softboxes is that the spread of light with a softbox is more contained.
  9. Snoots are conical shaped tools that narrow the distribution of light. These can be used to produce a very focused, harsh light.
  10. Honeycomb grids are basically honeycomb shaped metallic grids that direct the light for a more focused spread.

Location Portraits with Flash

I have liked using flash with photography so far. I think it makes the pictures look better. I really like how I can change where the flash comes from because I have like I have more control. I think it has made me a better photographer because I have a better understanding on how I want my style of photography to turn out.

Fill Flash Outside

Fill flash outside is when you use a flash in daylight to brighten shadows on your subject while still exposing for the natural background light. By adding fill flash, you “fill” in those shadows without overpowering the sunlight, which helps balance the exposure between the subject and background. This is useful in backlit situations, where the background is bright, but the subject’s face is in shadow. Using fill flash allows you to keep detail in the sky and surroundings while also properly lighting your subject, making your pictures look more professional.
